Magnamalo Ecology
Magnamalo is a Fanged Wyvern
Magnamalo - Tips, Tricks, Strategies, and How to Beat
Magnamalo is fierce, but luckily, not as punishing as it was in the Monster Hunter Demo. As a Fanged Wyvern, it may feel similar to those familiar with Zinogre, with many attacks that hinge on quick movements and stomps with its forelegs. It also has a variety of long-range, though fairly slow-moving, projectiles. Besides its devastating, powered-up “super” move, most of its most powerful attacks are very precisely aimed.
Weapon, Armor and Item Suggestions
Though all Weapons are viable if you know how to handle them well, we found taking Magnamalo on with weapons that can easily strike its back - like with Sword and Shield’s Falling Shadow - to be slightly easier - for reasons listed in the tips below. If able, choose a weapon that deals Water damage to take advantage of Magnamalo’s weakness.
As the first Magnamalo you’ll face is in Low Rank, there aren’t a ton of overtly powerful armor and weapon combos, and there is no need to build up a specific resistance. Wear Armor that suits your weapon.
Magnamlo can be trapped, so bring traps and Tranq Bombs with you to capture it, along with Recommended Item Loadouts.
Dango Suggestions
Magnamalo doesn’t seem to inflict any particular elemental damage, but it does have a few extremely powerful attacks. By the time you first encounter it, you’ll be able to order Magnaroar Bunny Dango, which grants Dango Moxie. This will prevent fainting one time, with a caveat. Look at your health bar after eating this - the arrows note how much HP you must have for Moxie to kick in when attacked.
Tips to Deal With Magnamalo’s Hellfireblight
Magnamalo inflicts a unique Hellfireblight - noted by a purple flame icon above your health bar. It will explode after a short amount of time, or, even sooner if hit hard enough.

Hellfireblight can be cured by rolling a few times, with a Deodorant, or by using a Wirebug Dash (with your weapon sheathed). Using a Wirebug Dash has the added benefit of leaving a spot of Hellfire on the ground behind you. If Magnamalo hits it, it will be knocked over. However, if used consecutively in this manner, Magnamalo will merely flinch - still a great advantage. If the Hellfire is left alone, it will begin to turn pink and explode on its own after a time. A ranged attack, or Magnamalo’s explosive Hellfire gas, will also cause it to explode, defeating its purpose. This is why it’s best to attempt to time a Wirebug Dash when you know Magnamalo will otherwise hit you, to get the benefit of using it against Magnamalo.
Magnamalo Combat Tips
Take advantage of Endemic Life for this challenging fight, especially extra Wirebugs. You’ll need them. Additionally, the Thunderbeetle, which makes Monsters susceptible to Stun, and Firebeetle, which deals damage and makes it easier to flinch Magnamalo, are useful. Use Wyvern Riding to your advantage, too. See Wyvern Riding Guide - How to Mount and Tips for more details. Attack parts that are engulfed in Hellfire to do more damage. If you extinguish them, Magnamalo will get knocked down
When it surrounds itself with purple gas, get in close to Magnamalo to avoid it. Use this opportunity to damage its parts covered in Flame - it could flinch it and prevent it from powering up.
Sometimes, only its back has flames, which is why being able to attack its back reliably is a nice boon. You can tell Magnamalo is powered up when its Hellfire is bright pink. This means it can pull off a devastating attack. However, there is still time to extinguish its flames - focus attacks on one body part with flames to knock it over.
When your hunter warns you, and Magnamalo rises into the air, it’s about to unleash a powerful attack that covers a huge portion of the field with explosive Hellfire. Wirebug Dash into the air, hang, and Dash again away from Magnamalo to avoid this huge, devastating attack. You can also try repeatedly emergency diving - by dashing away from Magnamalo and pressing B. Magnamalo’s tail (at least a piece of it) can be broken off and carved
Magnamalo Weaknesses
Magnamalo is weakest to Water, and somewhat weak to Thunder. Ailments don't effect it much.
Magnamalo Rewards and Drop List
Break Magnamalo's head, armblades, and back for extra rewards. Its tail can be severed as well.

Magnamalo High-Rank Drops
The best way to get Purple Magna Orbs are to sever its tail, carve the tail, and capture Magnamalo. Each method gives you a 3% chance at getting a Purple Magna Orb.
