what I packed for an alaskan cruise (2024)

From stunning glacier views to quaint coastal towns, an Alaskan cruise offers a once-in-a-lifetime experience, but to make the most of it, you’ll want to be prepared for whatever Mother Nature throws your way.

Here’s a look at what I packed for my Alaskan cruise, ensuring I was ready for every adventure, whether it was hiking, whale watching, or enjoying a gourmet dinner onboard.

Clothing Essentials

When packing for Alaska, think layers. The weather can change rapidly, so it’s important to be able to add or remove layers as needed. Here’s a breakdown of the clothing essentials I packed:

  1. Base Layers: I brought moisture-wicking long-sleeve shirts and thermal leggings. These were perfect for keeping warm without adding bulk, especially on chillier days or early morning excursions.

  2. Mid Layers: My mid layers consisted of fleece jackets and lightweight sweaters. Fleece is fantastic because it’s warm, lightweight, and dries quickly if it gets wet.

  3. Outer Layers: A waterproof and windproof jacket was my go-to outer layer. I opted for a jacket with a hood to protect against rain and wind. I also packed a down vest for added warmth on particularly cold days.

  4. Pants: I packed a mix of jeans, hiking pants, and comfortable leggings. Hiking pants are great because they’re usually water-resistant and offer more flexibility for outdoor activities.

  5. Footwear: Comfortable, waterproof hiking boots were essential for excursions, especially when exploring glaciers or taking nature walks. I also packed a pair of casual sneakers for onboard activities and a pair of stylish flats for dinner and evening events.

  6. Evening Wear: On most cruises, including mine, there are one or two formal nights. I packed a cocktail dress and a pair of heels for these occasions, along with a few nice blouses and dress pants for other evenings.

  7. Accessories: Scarves, gloves, and a warm hat were must-haves for chilly days. I also brought along a few statement necklaces and earrings to dress up my outfits in the evening.

Outdoor Gear

An Alaskan cruise is all about experiencing the great outdoors, so I made sure to pack the right gear for the excursions.

  1. Baggage: A small, lightweight backpack was perfect for carrying essentials like a camera, water bottle, snacks, and an extra layer during day trips. We did multiple excursions through the cruise line and having a backpack (or belt bag) was very vital.

  2. Binoculars: Alaska is teeming with wildlife, from bald eagles to whales. Binoculars were a must-have for spotting animals from both the ship and onshore.

  3. Sunglasses and Sunscreen: Even though it’s cooler in Alaska, the sun can still be strong, especially when it reflects off the water and glaciers. Polarized sunglasses and a high-SPF sunscreen were essentials.

  4. Reusable Water Bottle: Staying hydrated is important, especially on hikes and excursions. I brought a refillable water bottle to avoid single-use plastics.

  5. Camera Gear: With breathtaking scenery at every turn, a good camera was a priority. I brought along my DSLR with a zoom lens for wildlife shots, as well as a smaller point-and-shoot for more casual photos. A waterproof case was also handy for keeping my gear safe from the elements.

  6. Insect Repellent: Depending on the time of year and location, mosquitoes can be a nuisance. I packed a multiple travel-sized insect repellents just in case and I am so glad I did. The mosquitoes are no joke!

Toiletries and Personal Items

Cruises typically provide basic toiletries, but I prefer to bring my own to ensure I have everything I need.

  1. Skincare Products: The cold and wind can be harsh on the skin, so I packed a hydrating moisturizer, lip balm with SPF, and a gentle cleanser. I also brought along some sheet masks for an extra hydration boost after long days outside.

  2. Medication: I brought all my necessary medications, along with motion sickness tablets, just in case the seas got rough. I also packed a small first-aid kit with band-aids, antiseptic wipes, and pain relievers. You never know what you might encounter.

  3. Hair Care: The ship provided basic shampoo and conditioner, but I prefer using my own. We also packed a hairdryer as a group just in case the one provided didn’t cut it.

  4. Miscellaneous: Other essentials included a power bank for keeping my devices charged, a book(s) for downtime, and a journal for documenting my trip.

Packing for an Alaskan cruise can be a bit daunting, especially if you’re used to packing for warmer destinations. However, with the right clothing, gear, and toiletries, you can be prepared for whatever the adventure brings. The key is to focus on layers, waterproof options, and comfort, ensuring that you stay warm and dry while enjoying all the beauty Alaska has to offer. Whether you’re hiking through a rainforest, watching whales from the deck, or dining in style, packing smartly ensures you can fully immerse yourself in the incredible experience of an Alaskan cruise.
